PROJECT
Dream Corps (also known as Dream.org) is a non-profit founded by Van Jones that focuses on addressing mass incarceration and several other initiatives. Dream Corps includes #cut50, a bipartisan effort to cut crime and incarceration across all 50 states co-founded by Van Jones, Jessica Jackson and Matt Haney. The organization was in need of some customized graphics that would take the complex issues surrounding Criminal Justice Reform and translate them into simplistic visuals to support their effort and messaging.
RESEARCH
Since the politics field is an ever-changing environment, there was sometimes a very fast turn-around time required for these graphics. However, whenever possible, Dani Lou took time to read first hand accounts and speak with multiple Criminal Justice Reform advocates and the formerly incarcerated to gain a deeper sense of their specific concerns and the efforts surrounding them. The aim of the project was to create a sense of deep connection and visceral reaction to the issues within a visual format.

In December of 2018, Congress passed and the President signed the FIRST STEP ACT into law. The First Step Act’s goal is to give deserving prisoners the opportunity to get shortened sentences for positive behavior and job training and ensure they have the support they need to come home job-ready. This act has released or reduced the sentence of over 14,000 prisoners as of 2022, while over 60,000 now qualify to earn credit towards a sentence-reduction.
The #Dignity act for incarcerated women was introduced by U.S. Senators Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Richard Durbin and now Vice President, Kamala Harris, in 2017 to reform the way women are treated behind bars. To date, the Dignity Campaign has passed policies in 12 states that improve protections for women from mental and physical abuse while incarcerated. These policies have improved the living conditions for more than 30,000 women across the country.
The #stillnotfree campaign was started by Shaka Senghor, Michael Mendoza, the #cut50 team and Roc Nation as a Free Meek Mill initiative. It snowballed and created a movement to end probation, technical probation and parole violations.
